Google is testing the ability to create custom backgrounds for meetings in Google Meet. This feature was first announced at Google I/O 2023. Here's how it works.News

Google Meet Introduces AI-Enabled Custom Backgrounds

Google Meet, the widely used app for live meetings, will now employ generative AI to produce personalized backgrounds for meetings. This functionality, initially unveiled at Google I/O 2023, enables users to generate custom backgrounds tailored to specific meetings. For instance, if a virtual garden background is required, it can be created by simply providing a prompt. Additionally, users can generate office backgrounds or choose from various other options.

As discovered by Artem Russakovskii, users first need to open Google Meet, select a meeting, and click “Use visual effects.” Finally, they need to click on Create Background. However, this feature is currently being tested by the Google Workspace Labs program and is only available on PC.

“In Google Meet, you can use the ‘Generate a background’ prompt to generate background images using artificial intelligence. For example, you can ask Google Meet to generate an image of a magical forest,” Google said.

Additionally, users can select a style to “customize the wallpaper you create.” They can also click “Create Samples” to see Google Meet’s suggested wallpapers.

Google also says that for better results, users should try to include references to “style or mood, environment, and objects.” For example: “A cozy cafe with flowers.”

Users who want to test the feature must sign up for Google’s Workspace Labs program, and the official support document provides a full overview of the feature.
